Many people think that playing drums is not such difficult,
but in reality, if you want to get to deliver great drum line performances, you
need thousands of hours of study and practice.
First, learning how to play drums is developing your ability
to coordinate your limbs in such a way that you can do what you want or what is
required, while respecting the rhythmic equality between sound and tempo (the
execution speed) and the intensity of playing. It is equally important to
develop your technique in order to able to execute rhythmic formula at high
speed, using with both hands and feet.
There are three main requirements if you want to learn to
play drums:
- Feel the rhythm, the pulse of the music
- Be willing to study individually on a daily
basis - Be patient
Feeling the rhythm implies a person’s ability to reproduce
the rhythmic formulas they hear. The individual study is one of the most
important qualities without which you cannot progress, no matter how much
talent you have. Finally yet importantly, patience is perhaps the most
important quality to learn playing drums, because studying a complicated
rhythmic formula requires hundreds of repetitions until it sounds good. Then it
is included in various rhythms and songs.
You have a long way to go, but with determination, you may
also deliver great drum line performances. Keep in mind that Ginger Baker, Keith
Moon, Ringo Starr or John Bonham started just like you.
