Drum sets come in many different sizes,
allowing any drummer, tall or short, to find the most comfortable set. Here are
some of the most common standard drum set sizes:
- -Three-piece sets – these
configurations usually include a bass drum, a snare drum, usually 14 inches in
diameter, hi-hats in the 12-14 inches range, a hanging tom of 12 inches in
diameter and a 14-18 inch cymbal. The configuration works best for small bands,
for kids and for beginner drummers; - -Four-piece sets – these
configurations are the same as three-piece sets, plus one more tom. In some
cases, another cymbal might also be added. Configurations that add a floor tom
are common for jazz bands; - -Five-piece sets – the full entry-level drum kit is also the solution used by many professionals and they can
use many different configurations. The most common solution is to add one more
floor tom to the four-piece set, but many five-piece kits include effects
cymbals as well; - -Extended kits – besides the
standard configurations, drum sets can be assembled by the drummer based on
specific requirements. The necessary instruments are sold not only in sets, but
individually as well, allowing the buyer to configure the set that best fits
the drummer’s playing style and the music style.
